Adonis Live on the Great Lakes

American Integrity

American Steamship Company (“ASC”), located in Buffalo, New York, a pioneer in Great Lakes vessel transportation, is now in full production with Adonis.

The Adonis Human Resources suite will manage their vessel human resources information, crew scheduling, and crew payroll in their office and aboard their vessels.

The solution is being used shore side for crew management, training management, crew payroll, and government reporting in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.  Adonis is assisting ASC in managing crew schedules to ensure correct manning on their vessels as well as full replication between vessels and office for visibility in all locations.  In addition, the payroll module is integrated with the shore side system to provide efficiency by preventing errors caused by conflicting information in different locations.

Kevin McMonagle, VP-Human Resources, says “Adonis has allowed ASC to manage marine personnel and payroll data more efficiently and securely.”  ASC’s HR Manager, Kathy Elinski adds "Adonis software has helped to bring efficiencies to our crewing and payroll processes with its user-friendly queries and its ability to create custom views and reports. Our crewing and payroll systems are now one integrated program with security features, Windows software compatibility and many automated tasks and efficiencies that make information easily accessible and our jobs both onboard and shore-side easier.”

Mark Pietrocarlo, VP & Controller, notes "We utilized a home-grown payroll system since about 1985.  Our crewing system and process was substantially manual and had little tie-in to payroll.  With our recent Adonis implementation, we have an integrated system and much less paperwork.  Checks and balances are built-in to the system to assist with frequent personnel changes.  Adonis also assists us with various vessel employee compliance items and meshes with existing platforms for assurance."

ASC’s HR department has been using Adonis for over a year.  As Mary Banks, HR Administrator says, “Adonis has made great improvements in our government reporting process and has had a very big impact with linking our payroll and HR systems.  Adonis allows us to effectively share information with our vessel managers.  It has also eliminated paper crew changes allowing us to save time and paper.”

Payroll integrated, across the fleet ASC began using Adonis for vessel payroll earlier this year.  ASC’s Accounting Operations Manager, Peter Stadler, says “The implementation of Adonis has allowed ASC to integrate the Human Resources and Payroll systems.  Adonis is easy to navigate, receive inputs, and has allowed us to reduce duplicate entries.”

ASC’s Payroll Supervisor, Cheryl Peluso, adds “I really enjoy doing payroll with Adonis.  The ingenious payroll system, configuration, and replication process between the vessels and the office, allow for a smooth flow of information, ease in calculating payroll and taxes, entering overtime, and enabling payment, onboard as well as in the office.”

Adonis AS, a Norwegian software company, has been in the maritime market since it was founded in 1988.  It has been focused on developing the latest market solutions and has established a large portfolio of international customers.  Web Recruitment and Crew Portal are complementary features which can be delivered to the range of traditional Human Resource and Payroll modules.

Per Ove Kviteberg, Director of Sales at Adonis AS has great expectations to their approach on the US market. "We know that a large number of US maritime companies are struggling with somewhat old and outdated Human Resource systems, using a potpourri of fragmented systems which do not "talk to each other" and require a lot of manual labor.  We have already seen a growing interest in the advantages of one common solution, where ships and offices work seamlessly as a consolidated unit, across all tasks which are part of the daily work processes in the crewing and payroll departments," says Per Ove Kviteberg.

As a major part of the project, American Steamship Company has collaborated with Adonis to develop a complete US payroll system which is now installed on their vessels as well as in their corporate office.

“Adonis worked closely with ASC to add significant functionality and features to the software product”, says Alan Mis, Director of Information Systems.  “This was necessary to handle U.S. payrolls, state and government reporting, and union reporting in our multi-union and multi-company corporate structure.  This allowed us to retire several outdated and difficult to maintain systems that were previously used for crewing and crew payroll.”
